Community Expungement and Resource Fair

LOGANSPORT, Ind. – Ivy Tech Community College’s Logansport facility will be the site of a community expungement and resource fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at 1 Ivy Tech Way.

The program is designed to help community members and students begin the process of clearing criminal records so they can move forward with opportunities such as employment, housing and education, according to Mary Applegate, chair of the Human Services program for Ivy Tech’s Kokomo Service Area. Local attorneys will provide legal guidance.

Applegate said the event will include free legal information from Indiana Legal Services Inc. and screening to determine if applicants qualify to have their records cleared of convictions, arrests without a conviction, and dismissed charges.

In Indiana, the process of expungement seals certain criminal records from public view, but eligibility and waiting periods depend on the offense type and severity. According to Indiana Legal Services, three main requirements must be met before filing for an expungement: no pending criminal charges; all court costs, fines, fees, and restitution have been paid; and all relevant waiting periods have been met.

The Oct. 4 event is open to people who qualify as low income and only covers Indiana cases. Those interested should bring their criminal records, which can be printed at mycase.in.gov .

Volunteers from Ivy Tech and other community organizations will be on hand to share information about resources they offer.
