American Radio Relay League Field Day
CASS COUNTY AMATEUR RADIO OPERATORS WILL TAKE TO THE AIR DURING SIMULATED EMERGENCY DRILL.
Members of the Cass County Amateur Radio Club will participate in the 2024 American Radio Relay League Field Day event on June 22nd and 23rd.
This year’s event will be held at the Cass County Emergency Management Agency at 1227 N. State Road 17, just north of Logansport. A combination of temporary and permanently installed antennas will be used to try and make as many contacts as possible with other amateur radio stations in the U.S. and Canada during the 24 hour simulated emergency drill.
Local public safety, government officials and the public are invited to visit the EMA office and see the amateur radio operators in action. The event will be held from 2pm on Saturday, June 22nd and will continue until 2pm on Sunday June 23rd. Several amateur radio stations will be set up for the event, including one where the public is invited to get on the air and make some contacts. Several different modes will be utilized including voice communications, morse code, and digital modes.
During times of disasters, whether natural or man-made, or collapse of communications infrastructure, amateur radio operators can get on the air and provide vital communications to assist local public safety agencies and other organizations. If the power grid is down, amateur radio operators can use generators, batteries, and solar power to stay on the air and get messages through using thousands of frequencies available to them. Messages can be passed locally, regionally or world-wide.
All are invited to attend this year’s event. To learn more about amateur radio visit the American Radio Relay League website at www.arrl.org or the Cass County Amateur Radio Club website at www.w9vmw.org
