Donald Stratton MemoirThe First Memoir by a USS Arizona Survivor: Donald Stratton, one of the battleship’s five living heroes, delivers a ‘powerful’ and ‘intimate’ eyewitness account of Pearl Harbor and his unforgettable return to the fight.

At 8:10 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941, Seaman First Class Donald Stratton was consumed by an inferno. A million pounds of explosives had detonated beneath his battle station aboard the USS Arizona, barely fifteen minutes into Japan’s suprise attack on American forces at Pearl Harbor. Near death and burned across 2/3 of his body, Don, a 19-year-old Nebraskan who had been steeled by the Great Depression and Dust Bowl, summoned the will to haul himself hand over hand across a rope tethered to a neighboring vessel. Forty-five feet below, the harbor’s flaming, oil-slick water boiled with enemy bullets; all around him the world tore itself apart.

4 pm and 5 pm

Broadway Room (formerly Conference Room B)

Two education sessions will be held at the top of the hour and then patients can elect to receive a screening. If you would like to attend, please call (574) 753-2222 to reserve your spot at this free event. To learn more, ask questions, or schedule your own consultation, please call the Logansport Memorial Physician Network Surgical Services office at (574) 753-2222 and ask to speak with Kellee.

Go Ivy Day (Logansport)
Oct 26 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

KOKOMO, Ind. — Ivy Tech Community College’s Logansport and Kokomo campuses will open their doors in the upcoming weeks to give prospective students a chance to see the many opportunities community college offers for personal and career advancement.

The “Go Ivy Day” events are set for 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Logansport Campus at 1 Ivy Tech Way and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Nov. 3, at the Kokomo Campus at 1815 E. Morgan St. Both events will include campus tours; an opportunity to meet faculty, staff and students; and a look at the programs and courses offered at that campus. Visitors will be able to learn about free services offered to support student success as well as transfer options with Ivy Tech’s four-year partners. Participants can enjoy refreshments and Ivy Tech giveaways.

“Our instructors are putting together a great hands-on experience with everything from a virtual welder to robotics to health sciences simulators,” said Marcia Worland, vice chancellor for Enrollment Services for Ivy Tech’s Kokomo Region. “Faculty members will be joined by current students and alumni who will be on hand to greet visitors and share their Ivy Tech experiences. This is a great way for high school juniors and seniors to see how community college can be their pathway to a career or a four-year degree.”

Worland said some high school groups are already scheduled to attend but the event is open to anyone who wants to learn more about the educational and training opportunities at Ivy Tech.

“This would be a good opportunity for high school students to use a college visit day,” Worland said, “but we also want to welcome home-school families and people who may have ‘sat out’ a year or two after graduation who now are ready to get started on a degree.”

The “academic showcase” will include information and hands-on activities in the areas of business, computing and informatics, education, fine arts, health sciences, nursing, public services, and technology, along with information on university transfer opportunities. In the student services area, participants can get information on admissions, financial aid, academic advising, and student life and student success services.

Marriage Enrichment Class
Oct 29 @ 10:45 am
Marriage Enrichment Class @ Calvary Presbyterian Church | Logansport | Indiana | United States

Couples come to the altar bursting with love for each other. Yet, based on how many marriages are unfulfilling, unhappy, or worse yet, end in divorce, it would seem that the love that gets couples married isn’t enough to keep couples married. Maybe if we had the ability to love unconditionally, like God does, love would be enough…but we don’t. Therefore, love falls short. Love isn’t enough to save struggling marriages.

This study explores a radical hypothesis: Most marriages don’t fail because they lack love…they fail because they lack grace.

Grace can make good marriages into great marriages. Grace can bring intimacy and restoration to broken marriages. Grace means giving your spouse something they desperately need, but don’t necessarily deserve…things like kindness, forgiveness and the benefit of the doubt. And the best part is that if we focus on grace, the love we so desire with our spouse will naturally follow.

In this study, couples will:

Discover what lens they are viewing their spouse through, and how flawed lenses lead to flawed relationships
Discover how to meet their spouse’s 3 inner needs of the heart
Discover how to give their spouse 4 vital freedoms
Learn how to resolve conflict
Learn how a relationship built on grace results in mind-blowing sex
Learn how a Grace Filled Marriage leads to a life that truly makes a difference

This Small Group Study is led by Pastor Coenraad Brand and his wife, Kristena Brand, a local marriage family therapist. We are making the books and workbooks available free to participants

PUBLIC HEARING: U.S. 24 at Logansport Road
Oct 30 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

INDOT to host public hearings for U.S. 24 Intersection Improvement Projects in Logansport, Cass County

https://timely-api-images.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/20731/us-24-logansportroad_crop_AcX1.jpgThe Indiana Department of Transportation’s LaPorte District is developing plans for two proposed intersection improvement projects on U.S. 24 in Logansport, Cass County.  The proposed intersection improvements are median U-Turns, also known as J-Turns http://www.in.gov/indot/3660.htm.

J-Turn intersections enhance safety by preventing direct crossing and left-turn movements.

INDOT will host public hearings on Monday, October 30th and Thursday, November 2nd beginning at 6:00 p.m. (local time) at Logansport High School, 1 Berry Lane, Logansport, IN 46947

U.S. 24 at Logansport Road hearing – 10/30

U.S. 24 at C.R. 600 East hearing – 11/2

U.S. 24 at Logansport Road & C.R. 600 East

Each project proposes to modify the existing intersection from a county road yield crossing at a divided highway to a J-Turn intersection.  This type of intersection will prevent  traffic from crossing all four lanes of U.S. 24 in a single movement.  The project proposes to install new J-Turns in the median areas along U.S. 24 to the east and west of Logansport Road and C.R. 600 East.  As proposed, traffic on Logansport Road and C.R. 600 East will turn right when proceeding onto U.S. 24, making a legal U-turn in the median, then proceeding back onto U.S. 24 in the opposite direction to access Logansport Road and/or C.R. 600 East on the other side of U.S. 24.

U.S. 24 Intersection Improvement Projects

Each project proposes the installation of additional acceleration and deceleration lanes with J-Turn crossings in the median.  All proposed work would occur within INDOT owned right-of-way.  The maintenance of traffic plan includes shifting lane closures to allow construction activity to occur on one side of the roadway at a time.  Additional information will be presented as part of each public hearing presentation including project purpose and need, alternatives screening, traffic analysis, maintenance of traffic and project schedule.
